Had a delightful first visit to Peak. The brand new building is gorgeous. The front desk staff is welcoming and patient. The technicians were attentive and made me feel like I was the only patient there…[Dr. Adams] was extremely informative and caring. Something lacking in most other medical settings I’ve endured recently.

What Is a Dental Implant? The Gold Standard in Tooth Replacement

The tooth roots play an important role in maintaining your jawbone. Without stimulation from a missing tooth root, the bone in that area deteriorates, which can cause surrounding teeth to shift out of place and become loose. When more teeth are lost, the jaw will atrophy even more, causing even more problems.

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots inserted into the jaw. They are considered the most reliable tooth replacement method in dentistry. Unlike other methods that only restore the portion of the tooth above the gums, a dental implant can be paired with a crown, bridge, or denture, and restore a tooth from root to chewing surface.

dental implant-supported restorations

Implants allow you to replace the entire tooth, not just what can be seen above the gumline.

The Parts of an Implant-Supported Restoration How the Implant, Abutment, and Restoration Work Together

A complete tooth restoration consists of the following components:

  • Implant: The titanium post that's surgically inserted into your jaw and acts as a tooth root
  • Abutment: A piece that connects the implant to the restoration
  • Restoration: The artificial tooth that can be seen above the gumline. Dental implants can be used to support an individual crown, a dental bridge, or a full denture.

Dr. Adams and her expert team in Albuquerque, NM, use high-quality dental materials that are so lifelike that nobody will suspect you have replacement teeth.

Address Any Degree of Tooth Loss Dental Implants Are a Versatile Solution

single tooth

Single Tooth

When you are missing a single tooth, Dr. Adams can use just one dental implant paired with a crown to replace your missing tooth with a replica that looks like your natural tooth. The beauty of this method is that your dentist will not need to alter nearby healthy teeth to support a dental bridge (the traditional method of replacing a missing tooth).

Several Teeth

If you are missing several teeth in a row, our dentist can create a dental bridge that is supported on either end by dental implants. Unlike traditional bridges, this one doesn't require reshaping natural teeth to hold it in place. Dental bridges supported by implants can also replace a greater number of teeth than a traditional bridge.

full denture

A Full Denture

Denture wearers experience a host of benefits with dentures supported by implants. The most welcome one is the freedom they have knowing their dentures will not slip out of place when they are eating or talking with friends. Dental implants can also stop or reverse the weakening of the jawbone by encouraging bone growth and retention.

Meet With Dr. Adams to Learn More About Dental Implant Treatment

Missing teeth affect your self-confidence, but they can also affect the health of your whole smile. Gaps can lead to misalignment of your remaining teeth, additional tooth loss, and jawbone atrophy. While other methods can replace part of your tooth, none of them also replace the vital tooth root and prevent bone loss.

The first step toward repairing your smile is requesting a consultation so you can get the information you need to make an educated choice. Start today.

Dental Implants Treatment Timeline What to Expect at Our Albuquerque Office

For dental implants to be successful, you need sufficient bone density and your mouth should be free of gum disease. Dr. Adams will ensure you get the appropriate preparatory treatments before your implant procedure to ensure long-lasting results. While each procedure is different, your implant treatment typically follows these steps:

Concerned about going without teeth? In many cases, we can attach a restoration immediately so you won't feel uncomfortable in public.
Concerned about going without teeth? In many cases, we can attach a restoration immediately so you won't feel uncomfortable in public.

Preparatory Steps

Dr. Adams will plan your dental treatment using highly detailed 3D images of your mouth. If you need preparatory care, such as bone grafts or gum disease treatments, these will need to be completed before the implants are placed.

Dental Implant Surgery

Our modern dental techniques and the use of surgical guides let patients receive treatment with little discomfort. Before starting, Dr. Adams will numb the area so you can remain comfortable throughout the dental treatment. To place the implant, Dr. Adams will place the surgical guide in your mouth and then insert the implant.

Healing Period

It generally takes four to six months for implants to fuse with the bone, a process called osseointegration. Once fused, the implant acts as your natural tooth roots.

Abutment Placement

If the abutment was not placed earlier, it will be added to the implant after it has fused with the jawbone. This minor surgery requires making small incisions in the gum so the abutment can be attached to the implant. It typically takes a couple of weeks for the gums to heal and make a seal around the connector.

Impressions

Once the gums have healed, Dr. Adams will take an impression of the treatment area so she can design the restoration that will be attached to it. The restoration will be designed to look just like natural teeth and to fit comfortably in your mouth.

Restoration Placement

Once the restoration is ready, Dr. Adams will place it in your mouth to ensure it is comfortable and attractive. Once both of you are satisfied with the results, the restoration will be securely attached to the abutment and implant.
