Dental Hygiene Albuquerque
Total oral health begins with healthy gums. A dental prophylaxis, or cleaning of teeth, is the cleaning of teeth by a dentist or hygienist. A dental prophylaxis is designed to control gingivitis and prevent gum disease. It is recommended that healthy patients get a dental prophylaxis every 6 months in order to maintain good oral health.
Dental prophylaxis, performed by our dentist or hygienist, is an important maintenance routine that helps preserve gum and tooth health. Many people make the mistake of waiting until the pain sets in before they take dental action, but regular checkups and cleanings are certainly the preferred method for a beautiful smile and pain-free mouth.
Progression of Decay
Also known as Periodontal Disease, is inflammation of the gum tissue around the teeth. In Periodontal disease the inflamed gum tissue pulls away from the tooth creating a periodontal pocket that becomes infected. The body’s immune system fights the bacteria as the plaque spreads and grows below the gumline. The combination of bacterial toxins and the body’s natural response to infection causes a breakdown in the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place. If periodontal disease goes untreated, the bone, gums, and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed. The teeth may eventually become loose, painful and need to be removed.
Gums are mildly inflamed, may appear red or swollen and may bleed during brushing.
