Good Oral Health Goes Hand in Hand With Good Oral Hygiene

At Peak Family Dentistry, we believe the first and possibly most important step toward good oral health is the practice of complete oral hygiene. When done routinely and properly early on, basic oral hygiene combined with dental prophylaxis at least every six months can significantly prevent a host of different oral diseases from developing.

One type of oral problem that can be prevented with good oral habits is gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. Gum disease is commonly characterized by the inflammation of the gum tissue around the teeth which, when left untreated, can lead to the loss of teeth. This happens as the inflamed gum tissue begins pulling away from the tooth, causing a periodontal pocket to be created. The pocket then becomes an area that is easily infected. As the plaque spreads, the body naturally responds to fight the bacteria. The battle between the bacterial toxins and the anti-bodies can cause a breakdown in the bone and tissue which supports the teeth. This makes teeth loose and when it becomes too painful, removal of the teeth may be necessary.

While there are different treatments that can address periodontal disease – treatments that we are able to provide – we still highly recommend the consistent and continuous practice of proper oral hygiene to completely avoid the disease.

The same can be said for cosmetic dentistry. While we have methods to help improve your smile, nothing beats having a naturally good looking smile thanks to impeccable oral hygiene. As time passes and you require a little more professional help with maintaining your teeth, any solution or application can become more effective if you kept your teeth healthy throughout the years.

Upon your first scheduled visit to our facility, you will undergo a series of diagnostics tests. Through the results of the different evaluations, we are able to recommend not only the solution for any of your current oral concerns, but also ways you can take better care of your teeth and gums. This includes different cleaning methods as well as visiting us for your periodical dental prophylaxis.
